Description :
We are currently looking for a Bioinformatician to join our content management team in the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI). The main responsibility for the postholder will be the processing of nucleotide sequence data submissions ranging in scale from single short sequences through to genomes, metagenomes and next-generation sequencing studies. The work is carried out in close communication with our international base of submitters and involves giving advice on data submission requirements and protocols, validation and processing of the data and integration of the submitted data with assembly, project, sample and other high-level information. The post holder is expected to work with a diverse range of submitters and to contribute to the development of data and meta-data standards. Standards development is expected to influence our work both internally and externally; internal standards are used to guide the creation of automated submission processing pipelines for consistent high-quality validation and treatment of distinct types of data while external standards are valuable in establishing global minimum information availability. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with software engineers in the design and development of ENA submission pipelines. The ENA team maintains close collaboration with both data submitters and those retrieving data and offers extensive helpdesk facilities. The postholder will be part of the public face of ENA and is expected to promote the use of our services and to participate in user training. Active communication with our submitters and other users is strongly encouraged as it will help us to identify new services and improvements benefitting and extending. The successful candidate should have a broad knowledge of molecular biology, possessing a university degree in the life sciences and, ideally, a postgraduate qualification in bioinformatics or computational biology. Programming skills in PERL and/or Java are essential and experience of databases and sequence analysis tools would be highly advantageous. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work to deadlines are essential. Candidates with an ambition to work in an international environment are encouraged to apply. An initial contract of 3 years will be offered to the successful candidate. This can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of review The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK. It is Europe’s leading provider of information services to biological researchers in academia and industry. An integral part of this service is the archiving of nucleotide sequences in the ENA. The ENA consists of three component databases: the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) for next-generation sequencing data, the Trace Archive for capillary reads and EMBL-Bank for annotated assembled sequences. The ENA is one of the world’s largest scientific databases and contains more than 25 trillion sequenced base pairs requiring hundreds of terabytes of storage.
